CCA seeks $11B from FCC for nationwide rural 5G

The Competitive Carriers Association (CCA) says more money needs to be allocated to the ensure 5G makes its way into rural areas that likely wouldn’t get the new technology without support. Specifically, it has eyes on $11 billion more for the FCC’s 5G Fund.

Google urged the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to allow it to join Amazon and Microsoft in bidding on a multi-billion-dollar cloud contract set to replace the agency’s recently scrapped Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) award, arguing its capabilities have advanced significantly in recent years.

Verizon and Qualcomm Technologies are among a group of vendors and operators behind a new GSMA initiative to drive awareness of 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) technology – a fitting endeavor for these two considering their respective investments.

Dish raises $5.25B in secured debt offering

Dish Network received a vote of confidence from bond investors – to the tune of $5.25 billion, which it raised in a secured debt offering this week. The company announced on Monday that it wanted to raise $4 billion. Net proceeds of the offering are earmarked to finance the potential purchase of wireless spectrum licenses and for general corporate purposes, including the buildout of wireless infrastructure. It’s being set up as an inter-company loan with Dish DBS.

Women in Cybersecurity Aren’t Unicorns: ‘We Do Exist’

Women currently make up close to 25% of the cybersecurity workforce, according to Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) and Cybersecurity Ventures’ estimation. The number has nearly doubled since 2013, but it’s “still way too low,” which pushed Fortinet and WiCyS to work together to help the cyber community to “do better.”

Former Nokia software leader becomes CEO of Platform9

Bhaskar Gorti was previously chief digital officer at Nokia and president of Nokia Software. But he left that company as part of the executive reshuffling under its new CEO Pekka Lundmark. Gorti has now resurfaced as CEO of Platform9, a Mountain View, California, software company that manages distributed clouds.

Telstra carves out N. America niche serving connectivity to Asia

Telstra is a name most closely associated with Australia, but the operator has been doing business outside the country for about 70 years. It’s had a presence in North America specifically for about the past 25 years and is now looking to use its extensive network of undersea cables in the Pacific to boost growth in the U.S. and Canada.

WeLink turns up mmWave fixed wireless in new markets

Major U.S. carriers aren’t the only ones hoping to challenge cable with fixed wireless service for home internet. Startup WeLink has rolled out fixed wireless service using unlicensed millimeter wave spectrum across the markets of Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Tucson, promising straight-forward pricing and symmetrical gigabit speeds.

Rakuten launches autonomous networks R&D project

Rakuten isn’t calling its latest research project 6G, but a new collaboration with Nagoya University and Oki Electric Industry will explore and develop technologies for next-generation autonomous networks as part of a “Beyond 5G” initiative in Japan.
