New 5G phones unleashed despite MWC cancellation

MWC may be on an enforced hiatus this year but there's no shortage of device announcements that still need to go ahead as 5G momentum gathers pace. This week Qualcomm confirmed a long list of partners that have announced Snapdragon 865 powered 5G devices including ASUS, Black Shark, Fujitsu, iQOO, Lenovo, Nubia, OPPO, realme, Redmi, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE.

Verizon works with Samsung to achieve 4.2 Gbps on its 5G network

Today, Verizon said that it worked with Samsung Electronics Americas, Motorola Mobility and Qualcomm to demonstrate 5G peak speeds of 4.2 Gbps on its live 5G network in Texas. It did this using carrier aggregation, a technology that combines multiple channels of spectrum. The four companies combined eight separate channels of mmWave spectrum to achieve the multi-gigabit speeds on Motorola’s upcoming flagship smartphone.

Horizon forges a connection to Equinix's Chicago data center

Columbus, Ohio-based Horizon announced a new connection to Equinix's Chicago data center, which is a major on-ramp for the Midwest. Horizon has connected its network backbone to the Equinix data center located on Cermak Road in Chicago in order to provision its Ethernet and IP services between Columbus and Chicago.

Microsoft expands partnership with Telefónica

As part of an expanded partnership with Telefónica, Microsoft will open a new data center region in Spain. In addition to leveraging Microsoft's data center in Spain, Telefónica will lean on Microsoft to accelerate its internal digital transformation by picking Microsoft as its "strategic" cloud partner.

Mellanox ConnectX-6 SmartNIC Arrives, BlueField-2 on the Way

Mellanox announced that its ConnectX-6 Dx SmartNIC was now generally available and its BlueField-2 I/O processing unit (IPU) would be available later this year. Mellanox, which is being acquired by Nvidia in a $6.9 billion deal, announced the pair of SmartNICs at VMworld last summer.

McAfee Gets SASE, Buys Light Point Security

SAN FRANCISCO — McAfee went big at RSA Conference 2020. In addition to the security vendor’s CTO Steve Grobman delivering an opening-day keynote, McAfee also announced a deal to buy browser isolation startup Light Point Security, rolled out new secure access service edge (SASE) and cloud-native infrastructure capabilities, and launched a global managed detection and response (MDR) platform with DXC Technology as its first strategic MDR partner.

VMware Adds Extra Security Layer to Cloud Foundation

SAN FRANCISCO — VMware announced an extra layer of security for its Cloud Foundation software stack today at RSA Conference 2020 that includes Carbon Black technology as well as load balancer and web application firewall capabilities acquired from Avi Networks. The new VMware Advanced Security for Cloud Foundation also includes NSX Distributed Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDS/IPS), and all three of these security updates integrate into vSphere.

AT&T, Raytheon, Armis Join Open Cybersecurity Alliance

SAN FRANCISCO — AT&T and several other companies joined the Open Cybersecurity Alliance, which, less than five months after IBM and McAfee launched the group, now has nearly 30 members. The group also today made available OpenDXL Ontology, which it says is the first open source language for connecting security tools.

Juniper Fuses AI, Connected Security at RSA

SAN FRANCISCO — Juniper Networks kicked off the RSA Conference by adding more artificial intelligence (AI) across its security product line and advancing what the company calls “Connected Security.” It’s also getting a little bit SASE with its secure SD-WAN, but executives say they’ll talk more about this service later in the year.
