Turf war: Verizon's 5G Home vs. AT&T's fiber broadband service

Verizon and AT&T's contrasting strategies were on display this week during their respective earnings reports, and not just for how they are deploying 5G . Aside of their respective announcements on nationwide deployments of 5G, the two telcos are also battling for the hearts, minds and wallets of residential broadband subscribers.

AT&T's Elbaz says the carrier plans to transition FirstNet to 5G

AT&T’s SVP of Wireless Technology Igal Elbaz says that according to some speed tests, AT&T’s FirstNet first responder’s network is faster than any other commercial network in the United States. FirstNet is an LTE network. But speaking on a FierceWireless 5G Blitz Week panel today, Elbaz said, “We’re in the process of updating FirstNet to 5G.” 

Amdocs buys digital BSS vendor Openet for $180 million

Amdocs has reached an agreement to buy digital business support systems (BSS) vendor Openet for $180 million in cash. The deal, which is subject to closing conditions and the usual regulatory hurdles, is expected to close before the end of the fourth quarter in fiscal 2020.

Microsoft and other major companies launched the Transform to Net Zero initiative this week with the goal to accelerate progress toward a net-zero-carbon-emissions future. Coalition members — A P. Moller-Maersk, Danone, Mercedes-Benz, Microsoft, Natura, Nike, Starbucks, Unilever, and Wipro — also pledged to achieve net zero emissions no later than 2050. 

AT&T Hits ‘Nationwide’ 5G, Finances Sag

AT&T leaned on recent 5G network achievements to offset investor concerns about a decline in financial performance during the second quarter of 2020. The mobile network operator claims its 5G network running on low-band spectrum is now available “nationwide,” covering a potential population of 205 million people in 395 markets across the country. 

Microsoft Azure Cloud Biz Cools

Microsoft posted a robust end to its fiscal 2020, including strong revenues from its Azure cloud business. However, the pace of that cloud growth continues to slow, which has some keeping a closer eye on that trend.

Verizon Links IoT Platform With Microsoft Azure IoT Central

HPE Launches 5G Lab

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is opening a 5G lab in Fort Collins, Colorado, to integrate third-party vendors’ network functions with the HPE 5G Core Stack. The software stack for the 5G core, which includes 5G network functions from HPE and other vendors, is slated to be commercially available later this year. 

RAN market poised to eclipse $200B: Dell’Oro

COVID-19 has not killed the radio access network (RAN) market. In fact, the Dell’Oro Group just upwardly revised its projections for the sector, saying the RAN market will grow at a healthy pace over the next three years. Cumulative investments over the 2019-2024 forecast period are expected to be over $200 billion.

VMware upgrades its NSX Advanced Load Balancer

On Wednesday, VMware announced upgrades to its NSX Advanced Load Balancer while also touting its success in replacing legacy hardware load balancers. Building on its deal to buy Avi Networks just over a year ago, VMware launched its standalone NSX Advanced Load Balancer in 2019. Since then, VMware said it had displaced more than 7,000 hardware-based load balancers including deployments with six of the top-10 U.S. financial firms.

Canadian cableco Cogeco tests fixed wireless access on CBRS

Cogeco Communications is a cable company serving subscribers in Quebec and Ontario, Canada. And its sister company Cogeco Connexion serves customers in 11 states along the East Coast of the United States under the Atlantic Broadband name. In total, Cogeco serves about 1.8 million subscribers with broadband, video and/or telephony.

The vendor, which has more than 180 private wireless networks deployed to date, is assembling specialized features in a smaller software stack to target the SA 5G opportunity among enterprises.

Nokia to commercialize 5G standalone private wireless networking

Nokia is commercializing two private wireless solutions with the goal of seeding an ecosystem for 5G in a wide range of industries. The company says it has learned from its experience with private LTE networks that when equipment makers start adding connectivity chipsets to their machines they can create a virtuous cycle. When more devices can use the networks, more companies invest in private wireless networks, which in turn drives demand for more equipment.
