AT&T Waxes 5G Edge for Enterprise With IBM

AT&T and IBM are making good on their recently reinvigorated alliance to fuse enterprise and networking expertise. AT&T is deploying a 5G and multi-access edge computing (MEC) network at IBM’s lab in Yorktown Heights, New York, to develop and showcase new capabilities for enterprises seeking a private, on-premises cellular service.

Can Virtual Events Fix Tech’s ‘Manel’ Problem?

The problem with tech conferences isn’t just the lack of women — both speakers and attendees — it’s also that these events really aren’t designed for women, according to Ensono’s second-annual Speak Up report. Microphones designed to clip onto a suit jacket are more difficult to attach to a dress, for example, and on-stage barstools are tricky to navigate for skirt-wearing panelists.

5G Future Forum releases first MEC specs

Six carriers came together in January to create the 5G Future Forum with the aim of developing interoperable 5G specifications across the globe. Now, the founding carriers — Verizon, América Móvil, KT, Rogers, Telstra and Vodafone — have released their first two technical specifications, which are related to multi-access edge computing (MEC).

Private LTE network helps protect eldercare residents

Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans, according to the National Council on Aging. In long term care facilities, falls often happen at night, when unattended residents get out of bed in the dark. For years, the healthcare industry has been experimenting with technologies that address this problem. One solution is a wearable sensor that activates a camera when residents get up. To protect privacy, the camera in the room sends caregivers blurry images so that they cannot see exactly what residents are doing, but they can see whether they are in bed, sitting, standing or on the floor.
