Comcast and Verizon see network usage settle-in during WFH

The spike in network traffic is starting to flatten with subscribers settling into their work from home (WFH) routines. Comcast said on Thursday that its residential broadband traffic increases were starting to plateau in most of its markets, including in cities such as San Francisco and Seattle that were among the first to implement stay-at-home measures.

Secure remote access-as-a-service is now a critical requirement

There is no difference in the productivity needed at the home office and the traditional physical office. Home based employees need to have an excellent application user experience independent of their device, location or network. They must be secure from external threats such as malware, phishing, and have strong protection against sensitive data loss.

Qualcomm’s new NB-IoT chipset boasts power efficiency

Power efficiency is a top concern for IoT devices that must last for years in the field. Qualcomm Technologies says its new NB-IoT chipset for cellular connectivity requires less than one micro-amp (1uA) of sleep current. The new Qualcomm 212 LTE IoT Modem will be available in the second half of 2020.

Ligado gets green light in draft FCC order

After years of making its case, Ligado is finally getting a chance to move forward on L-band spectrum, with FCC Chairman Ajit Pai circulating a draft order that would approve, with conditions, Ligado’s application to deploy a low-power terrestrial nationwide network to support 5G and IoT.

GSMA extends contract with Barcelona through 2024

About two months after the GSMA canceled MWC Barcelona 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the organization announced it has extended an agreement to hold the event in Barcelona through 2024. A previous contract had Barcelona as the host city until 2023.

Google Slows Hiring, Data Center Spend Due to COVID-19

Google and parent company Alphabet aren’t immune to COVID-19-related business challenges. According to an email from CEO Sundar Pichai sent to employees on Wednesday, the tech giant will “significantly slow down the pace of hiring” for the rest of the year and reduce spending on data centers, machines, and non-essential marketing and travel.

Coronavirus Stunts IoT Insurgence

The oft-heralded and repeatedly delayed insurgence of IoT will have to wait as a global pandemic crushes many of the industries that could benefit from increased connectivity, ABI Research analysts said this week. BT picks Ericsson for 4G, 5G core

BT, along with the U.K. government, has been a bit resistant to remove Huawei equipment from telecom networks. But the British government has been under a lot of pressure from the United States to cut Huawei out. As a compromise, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson decided in January that Huawei gear must be removed from the nation’s core network. Huawei can supply gear for the country’s 5G radio access networks, but it will be restricted to a 35% cap in the RAN.

Samsung Taps Xilinx for 5G Beamforming

Samsung plans to use the Xilinx Versal adaptive compute acceleration platform (ACAP) in 5G New Radio (NR) gear, the companies announced today. The platform provides five times the compute density of traditional digital signal processors and enables more efficient beamforming in 5G commercial deployments, according to the chipmaker.

Nuage Tags Asavie for SD-WAN Extension

Nuage Networks today announced a deal with Asavie to extend its SD-WAN beyond the branch to remote workers, mobile devices, and IoT. It will see Nuage pair its SD-WAN 2.0 offering with Asavie’s SD Edge platform that was announced last week.

Charter notches 119,000 new internet subscribers in March

Broadband usage hits a record high on Easter Sunday—OpenVault

Driven in part by video conferencing, broadband usage spiked to a record high on Easter Sunday, according to data from OpenVault. Easter Sunday downstream consumption hit 16.3 GB per subscriber, which marked an increase of almost 16% over the previous Sunday (14.1 GB) and of 37.9% over Sunday, March 1 (11.8 GB), the latter of which was before COVID-19 social distancing measures started to take effect.

Cisco serves up $2.5B in financing for COVID-19 relief

On Tuesday, Cisco announced a new $2.5 billion financing program to help its customers and partners stay afloat during the coronavirus pandemic. The new Business Resiliency Program gives Cisco's customers some breathing room by deferring 95% of their payments until the start of 2021.

EDGE IS THE NEW CORE

Let’s face it, the debate is over when it comes to whether telcos should create innovative and localized services in the core or at the edge. If past performance is an indicator of future success, it’s clear telcos need a radical transformation of their self-defined legacy network hierarchies. This allows them to get away from rigid network boundaries and focus on net-new opportunities to drive growth and revenues. To create these new opportunities, they must go closer to the edge -- where the users are -- and have a flexible and nimble architectural approach. While this is a new model from a telco perspective,  it is business as usual for cloud providers, their real competition.

T-Mobile, Dish among best positioned: analysts

T-Mobile, cable and Dish Network are well positioned to benefit from the trends as the U.S. heads into a recession while Verizon and AT&T “will be caught between a slowing industry and share loss to challengers,” according to analysts at Wall Street firm New Street Research.

AT&T's core network traffic increases at a lower rate

While AT&T's core network traffic is still above its baseline levels, the increases actually dropped a bit last week. AT&T's core network traffic, which includes business, home broadband and wireless usage, went from a 26% increase—compared to a similar day at the end of February— on Thursday to an 18% increase on Saturday.
