SASE, Acquisitions Drive SD-WAN Competition, Gartner States

The SD-WAN market is hotter than ever, according to Gartner, who’s 2020 Magic Quadrant WAN Edge Infrastructure report fields no fewer than six market leaders. VMware and Silver Peak — the sole leaders in last year’s report — were joined this year by Versa and Palo Alto Networks, which ascended from visionary status, and Fortinet and Cisco, which hopped the fence from challenger to leader.

Mobile network infrastructure vendors recorded a 1% year-over-year drop in revenues during the second quarter of 2020, according to MTN Consulting. It marks the third consecutive down quarter for mobile infrastructure vendors, despite the widespread and global push to deploy 5G network riding on new radios.

Microsoft XDR Security Simplified Under Defender Brand

Microsoft simplified its extended detection and response (XDR) platforms with updates and integrated offerings to protect multi-cloud and Azure workloads. The cloud giant also updated its Azure Sentinel cloud-native security information and event management (SIEM) tool, which integrates into the XDR products.

CBRS bridges digital divide for McAllen, Texas

The global pandemic hit hard in McAllen, Texas, a town just 11 miles from the Mexican border. With a 2.5% infection rate, McAllen city officials knew they should not send students and teachers back into school buildings. "We were one of the hotspots in the country. Hospitalization rates were up, number of cases were up, so we had to go 100% remote," said McAllen Independent School District Superintendent J.A. Gonzalez.

Dish plots 5G network slicing with Ciena’s Blue Planet

Palo Alto Networks SASE Adds Microsoft Identity Management

Palo Alto Networks announced a partnership with Microsoft Azure this week that will see the security vendor integrate its secure access service edge (SASE) offering with the cloud provider’s Active Directory (AD) identity and access management platform. The integration aims to simplify identity-based policy enforcement when using Palo Alto’s Prisma Access and Prisma Cloud platforms.

Samsung and KDDI Complete 5G End-to-End Network Slicing Demonstration

Samsung Electronics and KDDI today announced the successful completion of the first 5G end-to-end (E2E) network slicing demonstration with a RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) in Tokyo, Japan. The companies showed a glimpse of various new use cases using 5G E2E network slicing on a virtual network that ties together Samsung’s virtualized core, virtualized RAN, and orchestration.

Verizon and AWS bring mobile edge compute to 3 more cities

Verizon and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are on track to deploy 5G edge compute in 10 cities in 2020. Today, they said they’ve deployed Verizon’s 5G Edge in three new locations: Atlanta, New York and Washington, DC. They had already launched the mobile edge computing (MEC) platform last month in Boston and the San Francisco Bay Area. They still plan to add five more cities by year end.

Paolini: Why did utilities pay so much for CBRS licenses?

The much anticipated CBRS Auction 105 is over, and it did not look much different from any other cellular auction. Mobile operators and broadband providers paid for over 90% of the proceeds, getting the most valuable licenses. Verizon alone paid for 41% of the proceeds, but only got 3% of the licenses paying $0.30 MHz/pop, compared to an average of $0.22 MHz/pop, per our Sparring Partners analysis.

Intel receives Commerce Dept. license to sell to Huawei

On August 17 the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) at the U.S. Commerce Department issued a new foreign direct product rule that requires companies to request a license from the Commerce Department in order to sell their products to Huawei. “We expanded the license requirement for products made with U.S. technology, worldwide,” a BIS spokesperson recently told Fierce, adding that the requirements went into effect on September 15.

Microsoft Azure Adds More Arc

Those moves come as the cloud giant continues to push a differentiated message in the hybrid cloud market.

T-Mobile US Keeps Open RAN on Back Burner

T-Mobile US stands out among its peers as one of the least vocal proponents of open radio access networks (RAN). It is the only major U.S. operator that hasn’t joined the O-RAN Alliance, a leading coalition of operators and vendors pushing for the disaggregation of network software and hardware running on commoditized gear.

Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Ampere Join Oracle Cloud Dream Team

HPE Scorches Dell, Nutanix Hyperconverged Revenue Growth

Dell Technologies and Nutanix remain the crown jewels of the hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) market despite being outshined by Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s (HPE) second-quarter HCI revenue growth, which soared 53.5%, according to IDC’s second quarter 2020 Worldwide Quarterly Converged Systems Tracker. Meanwhile, both Dell and Nutanix saw slight HCI revenue declines.

With schools now in session, Charter Communications announced on Monday it was re-launching its Remote Education Offer for free internet and Wi-Fi access for 60 days. The services are available to households with K-12th students, college students and/or educators. The promotion is for customers who live in a Spectrum market, but don't currently have Spectrum internet services.

AT&T tees up SD-WAN for global healthcare company

AT&T is serving up its managed Cisco/Viptela SD-WAN solution to a global healthcare group in order to improve its operational efficiencies. AT&T will deploy and manage the Cisco Viptela SD-WAN architecture to provide UDG Healthcare with near real-time visibility into its network assets, which includes  8,200 employees in 29 countries.

Telefónica fortifies SME cybersecurity with McAfee and Allot

Telefónica has doubled down on its cybersecurity platform for small and mid-size enterprises (SMEs) by adding new features from McAfee and Allot. With the new features and capabilities from Allot and MacAfee, Telefónica said it has doubled the infrastructure and resources in its cybersecurity service for Spanish SMEs.

Boost founder bucks waves, fights new MVNO battle

It was 20 years ago this month that Boost Mobile launched in Australia and 19 years since it was unleashed on U.S. soil. Back then, Boost founder Peter Adderton was inspired by surfers who had been “boosting” some cool waves. They were catching air in Australia around the same time he contemplated launching a prepaid business that would be affordable for that very demographic.

There’s a subtle transformation that is occurring among some wireless operators. As I listen to earnings calls and virtual conference panels, I hear wireless operator executives sprinkle terms that I once associated primarily with IT companies into their discussions about their networks. Terms such as "operational agility," "automation," and "as-a-service." And 5G seems to be accelerating this trend as many wireless networks are transitioning to a cloud-native network architecture.
